OFF SITE WORKSHOP: SAN FRANCISCO’S MISSION DISTRICT (GALERIA DE LA RAZA)
Presented by American Latino Heritage Fund and the National Trust for Historic Preservation
Historic preservation is a powerful concept that revitalizes neighborhoods and connects us to our past. In this workshop, practitioners from grassroots groups, community development corporations, nonprofit organizations, and academia will introduce historic preservation as a way to promote community development. Preserving our history creates social and economic opportunities, strengthens neighborhoods, and builds pride by celebrating shared heritage.

There are three historical and notably famous neighborhoods in California that have been the center of activism, commerce arts and culture, the Mission District in San Francisco, Boyle Heights in Los Angeles, and Barrio Logan in San Diego. Each neighborhood has enacted preservation and other land use tools to protect their communities from a changing landscape in large part fueled by government inaction and speculator driven development. The workshop will explore case studies of each neighborhood and the additional preservation and other tools required to preserve and strengthen their neighborhoods.
This offsite all day workshop will take place in San Francisco’s Mission District's Galeria de la Raza,2857 24th Street - San Francisco, CA 94110. This workshop is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Latino Historical Society with the California Preservation Foundation.
